Promiscuous Boy

“What’s up banana crammer?” Joey texted.

“For the tenth time it's catcher.”

Before school ended, I decided to come out to Joey, my best friend since elementary school. He was a brother from another mother. I first primed him with an easy question.

“So what do you think of this Chick fil-A thing?”

Joey sipped his drink through the straw and took a bite of his pizza and looked thoughtfully out the window. “It’s kinda gay if you ask me.”

We shared a laugh and I blurted out, “I have sex with dudes.” I looked for the tiniest of reaction from him.

Joey took another sip of his drink and swallowed hard. “What took you so long to tell me? I always knew you were funnier than a three dollar bill,” he laughed. “What, did you think I was some gay hating redneck?”

I shook my head. “I didn’t think you were, no.” I honestly don’t know why I came out to him; maybe I was tired of pretending I was something I wasn’t.

“Be ready at nine,” the text read. Joey had decided to treat me to a night out at Club Junction since he was leaving for basic training on Monday. I thought it was odd since he was treating me, but that’s just the type of guy he was, always doing for others.

“So where did Billy jet off to?” Joey asked.

“Work.”

“Oh, have you made your move yet?” Joey cut his eyes over as I typed on my Nexus. “Ah, not yet… but he’s been eyeing me, that’s for sure.”

“Eyeing you?”

“Yeah, like when he thinks I’m not looking or when I walk around in my underwear, he checks me out. I know it. I’ve seen him.”

“You walk around in your underwear?”

“Well, when I go take a piss I don’t get dressed, or when I want something to drink I just sprint downstairs. He just happens to be around when I’m rocking the undies.”

“Right.” Joey rolled his eyes and sighed heavily.

“Why the interest in my home life? Or should I ask why the interest in Billy’s whereabouts?”

“I was just curious is all.” Joey shrugged and focused his attention on the road. I glanced over at Joey and pictured him getting his head shaved for basic training.

“You’re going to lose all this lovely hair,” I said, running my fingers through his dark curly locks. He playfully slapped my hand away. “Well you know the girls like guys in uniform; you’re guaranteed to get laid on the regular now.”
